Thanksgiving 2019 with the Indigenous Land Protectors of Mauna Kea
During my undergraduate studies at CU Boulder, I delved into a captivating course on Indigenous sovereignty. This exploration exposed me to pressing global issues, such as the ongoing struggle of Indigenous land protectors at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, who are resisting the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope. By understanding the historical and contemporary challenges faced by Indigenous communities worldwide, I developed a deeper appreciation for their resilience and a commitment to supporting their sovereignty.
Inspired by my studies on Indigenous sovereignty, I sought a more meaningful way to spend my holiday break. The ongoing struggle at Mauna Kea resonated deeply, and I felt compelled to support the Indigenous land protectors in their fight against the Thirty Meter Telescope. Armed with a hitch-hiking sign and a sense of purpose, I embarked on an adventurous journey to Hawaii, eager to contribute to the movement in any way possible. When the man to pick me was an old founding member who helped FORM the Earth Guardians group, I knew that me being there was divine fate. This transformative experience would forever shape my understanding of environmental justice and Indigenous rights.
